Finland at Christmas | Northern lights over the festive season

A brief immersion in Lapland’s nature to witness the great spectacle of the northern lights.

The Northern Lights are most visible from particular areas around the poles. After considering several options, we chose Lake Inari in Finland for its excellent conditions for viewing this natural wonder and its accessibility.

Finland + Lapland in winter: hiking and the Northern Lights at Lake Inari

Northern lights at Christmas

Winter in Lapland is spectacular. The forests are dyed white and the blue light known as Kaamos is produced. Statistically the most likely to see Auroras are between September and March. The period between September and December is a good time due to the clarity of the night skies and from February to March due to the equinox. In any case, we are talking about probabilities; no one can be sure when the conditions are in place for this extraordinary phenomenon to appear.

There is no “aurora alert service” here. On arrival, we create a phone messaging group for participants, the guide and local staff to send alerts when the lights appear.

Christmas skies are usually clear, giving us more chances to observe this spectacle.

The northern lights

What are Northern Lights?
The polar aurora is a glow or luminescence visible in the night sky at high latitudes, in the Arctic and Antarctic. In the northern hemisphere, it is known as the aurora borealis, or more popularly, the Northern Lights.

What do the auroras look like?
An aurora can begin as an isolated arc that spreads on the horizon. Around midnight the arch can begin to increase its brightness, forming waves and vertical structures that resemble curtains of light. At a certain point the whole sky can be filled with bands and spirals that tremble and move quickly from horizon to horizon.

When do you see the auroras?
Visibility depends on solar activity, season and time of night. Auroras are more frequent and intense during high solar activity. The best seasons are around the equinoxes, March and September, and sightings become more likely from midnight.

Where can you see the northern lights?
In circles around magnetic poles called auroral ovals. In the northern hemisphere this area extends through Canada, Greenland, Iceland, northern Scandinavian peninsula (Norway, Sweden, Finland) and Siberia.
