Travel to the desert | Travelling to the Sahara Desert

Our best routes through the Sahara and the great deserts of Africa

The desert is not an empty place. It is a territory of silence and infinite horizons where time seems to walk at another pace. When to travel to the desert? Best time to travel to the Sahara

Sahara is known for its extreme contrasts, and choosing when to go can make a difference.

The Sahara has its charm at any time of year, but some seasons are more welcoming for travellers. Spring and autumn are usually the best times to explore the world’s largest desert. Temperatures are milder in these months, allowing you to enjoy the landscape without the scorching summer heat or the intense cold of winter nights.

Algeria trips | Winter in the Sahara | Desert travel

We began our professional journey organising desert trips and, 40 years later, we still consider the desert one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

For winter 2026, we suggest four ways to discover Algeria. Two focus on the Tadrart region and its labyrinths of rock and sand. A third explores the Sahara through the Grand Erg Occidental, while the fourth offers a more conventional journey through northern Algeria’s historic cities and monuments.

Last places to travel to the Sahara this winter

Winter offers ideal conditions for venturing into the desert. Milder temperatures let us travel without oppressive heat. At this time of year, the Sahara is at its best: cool nights beside a campfire beneath an immense sky, clearer light, and days when we can hike and stop to eat without sweltering.

From spring onwards, temperatures soar, exceeding 45 degrees when summer arrives.

New Year in Algeria | Improvised grapes and midnight chimes with saucepans

The Algerian Desert is not a logical environment for what we think of as a Christmas holiday; there is no urban life, no street lights and no Three Kings parades. The traveler looking for desert at Christmas is because seeks a change of scene.

Ever since the 1980s, when we spent our first New Year in the Algerian Sahara, we have sought to share this experience with you.

Why do we like to travel to the Sahara so much?

“The desert is too vast to accommodate lies.”

This is how Brahim, our 63-year-old Tuareg guide, explained why things are different in the desert. Brahim was the human GPS who guided our expedition to Libya for a front-row view of the solar eclipse in 2006.

Our long history of Saharan travel began in the early 1980s, when we opened the agency. Those first 4×4 routes through Algeria and Morocco gradually expanded. Mauritania, Tunisia, Niger, Egypt and years after the Chad, Sudan and Libya completed our range of trips to the Sahara Desert.

ROCK ART The paintings and engravings on the rocks and walls of Tassili N’Ajjer form the world’s largest collection of open-air Neolithic art.

Tassili N´Ajjer, the world's largest exhibition of outdoor neolithic art

The collection of paintings and engravings on rocks and walls in Tassili N’Ajjer is the world’s largest open-air collection of Neolithic art.

A World Heritage Site since 1982 and a Biosphere Reserve since 1986, its walls bear the traces of prehistoric civilizations which, almost by miracle, remain in the midst of a terribly hostile climate much of the year.

The Tadrart is the objective of our next trips to Algeria from October to March, with Red sand dunes and an impressive canyon, where fantastical landscapes conceal sculpted stone formations and springs of crystal-clear water.
