New Year in Algeria | Improvised grapes and midnight chimes with saucepans

The Algerian Desert is not a logical environment for what we think of as a Christmas holiday; there is no urban life, no street lights and no Three Kings parades. The traveler looking for desert at Christmas is because seeks a change of scene.

Ever since the 1980s, when we spent our first New Year in the Algerian Sahara, we have sought to share this experience with you.

A trip to take a break from routine

Living the experience of celebrating the New Year in the middle of nowhere is something special. Improvised grapes, saucepan chimes and live Tuareg music can make this year-end celebration unforgettable. To welcome 2026, which we hope will be much better for everyone, in a unique environment.

At New Year, between Christmas at home and returning to work, a week in the desert, far from everything and everyone, can be the best stress remedy.

The routes let you celebrate Christmas at home and New Year in the Sahara. Winter days are shorter, so are the journeys, and our aim is to enter the desert to celebrate New Year’s Eve somewhere remote and avoiding contact with other people.

ALGERIA

Almost 80% of Algeria is Sahara, with some of North Africa’s most beautiful landscapes. The combination of rock and sand on our Tadrart 4×4 route is unlike almost anything we have seen elsewhere.

Welcome to the big empty space

Here, rock and sand dominate, an unfamiliar experience that evokes almost spiritual feelings of vastness, grandeur and solitude…

The Sahara Desert

“The desert is too vast to contain lies.”

That was how Brahim, our 63-year-old Tuareg guide, explained why things are different in the desert. He was the human GPS guiding our Libya expedition to watch the 2006 solar eclipse from the front row.

Our long history of Sahara routes began in the early 1980s when we opened the agency. Initial 4×4 journeys through Algeria and Morocco expanded to Niger, Tunisia, Mauritania and Egypt, then Sudan, Chad and Libya.

Desert travel means leaving behind the comforts we expect on holiday.

Djanet and the Tadrart

Djanet is the gateway to two of the most fascinating areas in the entire desert: The Tassili N’Ajjer and Tadrart. As access to the Tassili plateau is uncertain, we steer our compass towards the magical dunes of Tadrart.

Geographically, Tadrart forms the foothills of Libya’s Acacus Mountains. Giant dunes change colour with the daylight, while wind-eroded rocks take on mysterious shapes.
Absolute silence and solitude, voluntary social distancing: welcome to Tadrart.

The Hoggar Massif

The Sahara is not just large stretches of sand; north of Tamanrasset rises the Hoggar massif in which highlights the Mt. Tahat with his 3003 meters high, one of the highest peaks in the Sahara. From Hoggar to the north rises the granite massif of the Tefedest, combination of peaks of almost 2000 meters with ‘oueds’ sandy. We will travel the entire contour of the massif to its northern end in the Djebel Garet el Djenoun. The western slope (White Tefedest) and the east (Black Tefedest ) await us.

Algeria in the Mediterranean

For history and archaeology enthusiasts wanting to discover the development of culture in Algeria’s Mediterranean north first hand.

For a week we explore northern Algeria’s archaeological treasures, including the Roman ruins of Timgad and Djemila. Highlights such as Tipasa and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania reveal the region’s rich heritage and its historic, strategic importance in the ancient Mediterranean.
