Discovering Tuareg culture, sitting on the sand by the light of a campfire beneath an endless star-filled sky.

Algeria trips | Winter in the Sahara | Desert travel

We began our professional journey organising desert trips and, 40 years later, we still consider the desert one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

For winter 2026, we suggest four ways to discover Algeria. Two focus on the Tadrart region and its labyrinths of rock and sand. A third explores the Sahara through the Grand Erg Occidental, while the fourth offers a more conventional journey through northern Algeria’s historic cities and monuments.

New Year in Algeria | Improvised grapes and midnight chimes with saucepans

The Algerian Desert is not a logical environment for what we think of as a Christmas holiday; there is no urban life, no street lights and no Three Kings parades. The traveler looking for desert at Christmas is because seeks a change of scene.

Tassili N´Ajjer, the world's largest exhibition of outdoor neolithic art

The collection of paintings and engravings on rocks and walls in Tassili N’Ajjer is the world’s largest open-air collection of Neolithic art.

A World Heritage Site since 1982 and a Biosphere Reserve since 1986, its walls bear the traces of prehistoric civilizations which, almost by miracle, remain in the midst of a terribly hostile climate much of the year.

The Tadrart is the objective of our next trips to Algeria from October to March, with Red sand dunes and an impressive canyon, where fantastical landscapes conceal sculpted stone formations and springs of crystal-clear water.
