Despite its small size, Costa Rica is one of the countries with biodiversity on the planet. If anything defines this country, it is a simple word that carries particular meaning here: nature. Wherever you look, nature surrounds you, with beaches and crystal-clear waters, tropical forests, waterfalls, hot springs, active volcanoes, jungle, Caribbean mangroves and coral reefs…

Turtles nesting in Tortuguero

The Tortuguero National Park lies on the northern Caribbean plains, and from June to October you can watch the egg-laying of the Giant green turtle and watch turtle hatchlings make their short but momentous journey from the beach to the sea. The area is exceptionally scenic, and its dense vegetation supports many aquatic and terrestrial animal species.
Whale watching
Watching a humpback whale leap from the sea, as if dancing against the wind, is something everyone should experience at least once.
Humpback whales and Bryde’s whales are the most common in the area. These huge mammals can reach 15 metres in length, with females even larger than males. Despite their size, they can leap out of the water, creating an unforgettable sight.
Cloud forest
One of the peculiarities of Costa Rica is that it has cloud forests in its interior. These forests grow around mountains where moisture from the clouds lingers as mist. Usually found at around 1,600 metres, they have cool conditions and constant fog, allowing moss and ferns to cover the ground. Orchids are common, and many plants hang from the trees’ bark and branches. On our trip, we will visit several of these forests and can even join a search for the resplendent quetzal, one of the world’s most striking birds.

Volcanoes
Costa Rica is one of the countries with the most active volcanoes in the world: 5 in total. The best known is Arenal, in the La Fortuna district, which has constantly emitted gases and water vapour since 1968, with occasional explosions releasing hot solid material. On the trip, we will take several walks through Arenal Volcano National Park.
Few places in Costa Rica inspire more respect and admiration than Arenal Volcano.
We will walk through the rainforest on the suspension bridges of Mistico Park, then take a guided walk along Arenal 1968’s private trails. This forest route offers panoramic views of the lake created by the volcano and the chance to walk over volcanic rocks dating from the eruption of 29 July 1968. With luck, we will see mantled howler monkeys, crested guans, oropendolas and toucans.
Flora and Fauna
Costa Rica has a rich fauna due to the number and variety of species Costa Rica is one of the world’s most admired destinations for biodiversity. Wildlife watching is a constant feature of the trip: turtles, crocodiles, monkeys, sloths, parrots, macaws and toucans, among others. Plant lovers will find more than 10,000 species of plants and trees, offering extraordinary biodiversity.
