What is the best time to travel to Nepal?

Choosing when to visit Nepal can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one. The weather varies considerably with the seasons, especially if you are planning one of our treks to enjoy views of the Himalayas.

For many, autumn (Oct–Nov) is the best time to visit Nepal, with stable weather and clear skies.

In general terms, there are two times of the year that we could say are "the best time to travel to Nepal”. The first is autumn, between October and November. The weather is stable, skies are clear and mountain views are spectacular: an ideal time for treks such as Everest or Annapurna.

The second-best time to visit Nepal is spring, from March to May. Flowers fill the landscapes, particularly rhododendrons. Temperatures are pleasant, with slightly more humidity and lower visibility than in autumn.

High season falls in October and November, while April is also busy. Book in advance if you plan to travel at these times.

Best time to travel to Nepal

Nepal’s climate is strongly seasonal, and each season shapes the travel experience, especially if you want to combine culture, nature and trekking. Choosing dates depends on both the weather and what you want to see and do. Adapting your trip to the season is key to discovering Nepal.

Nepal in Summer / Monsoon (June, July, August and September)

The monsoon arrives at the beginning of June and lasts until mid-September. Storms are common in the evenings and nights, but this also has a positive side: the country becomes intensely green and mountain landscapes acquire a special beauty.

Trekking: routes such as the Poon Hill viewpoint trek are possible, but you must be prepared for rain and plenty of leeches.

For travellers unafraid of rain… or leeches

Cultural trips and safaris: Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and Chitwan National Park are good options. The monsoon jungle is at its most lush.

The best: Fewer travellers, lower prices and lush nature.
Disadvantages: Daily rain, muddy paths and leeches on the trek.

Temperatures and precipitation in summer

Nepal in Autumn (October and November)

Best time of year for trekking in the Himalayas

If there is a star season for trekking on Nepal, it is autumn. The skies are completely clear, the days warm and the Himalayan views spectacular.

It is the perfect time for any mountain trek: Annapurna Base Camp, Everest Base Camp, Pikey Peak, Poon Hill… all are at their best.

It is also high season, so flights and lodges can fill quickly. Book ahead and take advantage of our special prices for the first 4 places.

The best: Ideal weather, excellent visibility and stunning landscapes.
Disadvantages: Increased influx of travellers, higher prices.

Autumn temperatures and rainfall

Nepal in Winter (December, January and February)

Ideal for cultural trips and trekking at low altitude

Winter in Nepal is cold, especially at night and in the mornings. Temperatures drop in Kathmandu but are not extreme. In the high mountains, however, snow can block trails and passes.

Trekking: recommended only on routes at moderate or lower altitudes. Nights in lodges are cold, so a good sleeping bag is essential.

Culture: it is an excellent time to explore the Kathmandu Valley, Bandipur and Pokhara, or go on safari in Chitwan.

The best: Fewer tourists and sunny, pleasant days.
Disadvantages: Intense cold at night and dawn; high mountain areas inaccessible.

Nepal in Spring (March, April and May)

Spring is a good season to travel to Nepal. The valleys are warmer, while the mountains offer more pleasant hiking conditions.

An ideal time for routes such as Annapurna Base Camp, Pikey Peak and Everest Base Camp. Rhododendron forests are also in bloom, filling the landscapes with colour.

The best: Mild days, reasonably clear skies and nature in bloom.
Disadvantages: Visitor numbers begin to rise, though they remain lower than in autumn.
