Albania plans to open borders in June

Albania is moving towards full reopening as of next Monday, 1 June. The new rules that will enter into force will allow tourists to visit as the 14-day quarantine requirement is removed.

Albania opens borders as the country moves towards full reopening.

Albania will reopen day-care centres and kindergartens and will start its tourist season on June 1, said Tuesday (26/05) the minister of health. The local press in Albania issued new rules to be adopted this week.

When will Albania open its borders?

From 1 June 2020 all land borders will be reopened;

  1. The 14-day quarantine requirement for entry into Albania will be removed;
  2. Quarantine shall only be applied in specific cases when ordered by the health authorities;
  3. Kindergartens and day-care centres will be reopened;
  4. All curfews throughout the country and restrictions on intercity travel will be lifted;
  5. There will no longer be red areas and green areas throughout the country;
  6. The beaches connected to the hotels will be accessible to hotel guests;
  7. Sports activities without spectators shall be permitted;
  8. Reopening of gyms, parks and similar centres will be allowed.

Who will be able to travel to Albania?

Any EU citizen or resident who has not been more than 14 days outside EU territory may travel to Albania, including for sightseeing. Only visitors who are visibly ill or declare themselves ill on arrival will be refused entry.

What restrictions or measures will there be upon arrival in Albania?

For EU citizens or residents who have not been outside the territory of the Union for more than 14 days, the Albanian government only inform them of the health measures in force in the country.

Hotels are open as well as shopping malls and other shops. Certain measures remain in force, such as the prohibition of public meetings, the wearing of masks and respect for the rules of social distancing.

Why? travel to Albania?

Albania is undoubtedly Europe's least-known country and one of its most interesting. After years under one of Europe's harshest communist dictatorships, it is gradually revealing its treasures.

The second phase to lift the restrictive measures began in Albania on 23 May. Bars, restaurants, cafes, museums and libraries began to open their doors. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the opening of borders with neighbouring countries. In 56 of the country's 61 municipalities, called green areas, curfews have been completely abolished, while in the red areas, including Tirana, curfews remain in place.

Is Albania a safe destination?

Albania has had one of Europe’s lowest rates of infection. The local government’s initial measures contained the pandemic effectively, and current precautions resemble those in European Union countries, following WHO criteria.

Does Albania have adequate routes?

Even today, despite its tourism boom, Albania remains apart from mass tourism. Our routes visit uncrowded places and, depending on the itinerary, run partly or entirely through natural areas with little contact with other travellers. All the local guesthouses we use have also received specific training in safety and hygiene measures.

The countries with which our itineraries are commonly combined (North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro), are in a similar, if not identical, situation, and land border crossings are guaranteed on the scheduled travel dates.

Updated 22 May

Albania will reopen its borders this month (May) and prepare to welcome tourists, Prime Minister Edi Rama said last Thursday 21/05 in Parliament. Albania did not report new deaths due to coronavirus for more than three weeks.

“I am telling you that in May, Albania will open up completely; the borders will open. We will prepare for the tourist season,” Rama said.

Tourism is a growing industry in Albania, generating more than 90,000 direct and 200,000 indirect jobs. It has been one of the sectors hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Thanks to the dignity and seriousness that characterized our response to the pandemic, Albania is currently among this very small group of countries that are admirable for the results they have achieved," said the Albanian Prime Minister.

Borders in Albania were closed in March to stop the spread of covid-19. So far, 969 cases have been confirmed in the country, and the government has taken significant steps to loosen existing restrictions.

Albania has a night-time curfew, though some restrictions have eased. Mass gatherings and public transport remain prohibited, and people cannot leave four red zones, including Tirana.

With only five new infections reported in the last 24 hours, Albania is now registering (25/05) only 167 sick people, with 31 Albanians dead out of a total of 969 infected.

When can we travel abroad?

Although nothing specific has yet been reported on the possibility of start travelling abroad, it is expected that it will be by the end of June or early July depending on the phase of each autonomous community.

With travel disrupted and COVID-19 health policies constantly changing in each country, we will update this article as often as possible to show which borders remain closed, where you can travel and when you can go.
