Travelling to Costa Rica | Costa Rica opens its borders to tourism

Can you travel to Costa Rica?

Tourism Minister announced last Monday 27 July the opening of borders with the European Union. To revive its tourism industry, Costa Rica will begin reopening to international commercial flights while maintaining health precautions.
A note sent to our offices by our Costa Rican partners indicates that travellers from our country will be welcomed in Costa Rica provided they meet a number of requirements:

  • A negative COVID test taken within the 48 hours before the start of the trip.
  • Complete the Costa Rican Social Security Fund’s digital epidemiological form.
  • Have travel insurance covering quarantine accommodation and medical expenses in case of acute illness.
  • Visitors who do not meet all these requirements will not be able to enter Costa Rica.

A Safe Destination

In Costa Rica, the impact of the pandemic has been limited and for a short period of time. The measures taken by the government and a robust health system have succeeded in effectively halting the progress of the virus.

Costa Rica is one of the best destinations to travel to this summer. For years, Costa Rica opts for a sustainable tourism that values its biodiversity, promoting the decentralization of visitors. In addition, Costa Rica has the advantage of offering semi-private tourism, which allows some isolation.

Situation as at 15 May

On May 1, Costa Rica, which never decreed a complete lockdown, eased its restriction, allowing theaters, cinemas, hairdressers, gyms and sports centers to operate at reduced times and with strict guidelines. The ban on foreign tourists was originally established until May 15, but now extended until 15 June.

Since March 18, Costa Rica has closed its borders (land, sea and air) to foreign travellers. The travel ban has been extended and will last at least until 15 June. During the travel ban, only Costa Rican citizens and residents can enter the country and must be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Costa Rica has managed to combat the pandemic with some success, with only 903 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (15/05) throughout its territory, of which 592  people have recovered so far and there has been 10 deaths , staying 301  active cases remaining.
