Where to travel safely?

Updated on 15 June 2020

We will try to keep our information as up-to-date as possible so that it can serve as a guide to countries to which it is possible to travel.

“I think we will return to a fully functioning Schengen area and freedom of movement for citizens by the end of June, if the health situation permits,” said Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson after Friday’s videoconference with the Member States (05/06).

After virtually closing for three months because of the coronavirus pandemic, most EU countries have committed to opening their borders and easing related travel restrictions in mid-June. Spain, however, announced that its borders would only open from July.

Although it is not yet possible to set exact dates to start the travel abroad; we are keeping track of developments around the world

When can we travel abroad?

Although nothing specific has yet been reported on the possibility of start travelling abroad, travel is expected to resume by late June or early July, depending on developments in each autonomous community. Last Sunday (31/05), the Spanish government announced a “final extension” of the state of emergency until 21 June.

Is it safe to fly by plane?

The Ministry of Health’s only requirement for flying is to wear a mask. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency states that air on planes is safer and cleaner than the air we normally breathe.

Entry restrictions

Many countries have restricted foreign arrivals through border closures, quarantine requirements or bans on certain nationalities. In this regard, the EEC has published a series of recommendations destined to travel safely again when the time comes, although it will be the states that will ultimately make the decision.

With travel disrupted and COVID-19 health policies constantly changing in each country, we will update this article as often as possible to show which borders remain closed, where you can travel and when you can go.
