Difficulty / Conditions of travel
This is an active cultural trip with some walks, rather than a dedicated trekking or hiking itinerary. The longest walks last about 3 hours and are not demanding, although loose ground around David Gareja can be slippery and requires care. In Svaneti we will be above 2,000 metres on alpine terrain. We recommend good walking footwear and warm clothing for the season and mountain conditions.
Recommended equipment
• Suitable walking shoes.
• Comfortable trainers or shoes.
• Small 20–25 l backpack for personal belongings on day walks.
• Warm clothing for the days in Svaneti: a three-layer system of windproof jacket, fleece and thermal base layer.
• Sleeping bag liner for the night on the train (and earplugs).
