Gorillas in Uganda | Travel to Uganda in summer

If you have always felt envious of photographs of colleagues or friends in the jungle with a silverback in the background, now is the perfect time to decide to visit them.

Visiting gorillas in Uganda costs $920, a significant part of the travel budget, but it is worth it.

Uganda is one of central Africa’s least-known destinations, yet has enormous tourism potential. Kidepo Valley National Park, for example, offers sightings of four of Africa’s Big Five. There are also major geographical landmarks such as Murchison Falls and the source of the Nile. Above all, however, are the Visits to the Mountain Gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys found only in Uganda and neighbouring countries such as Rwanda and Congo.

Kampala is chaotic, with terrible traffic. Plan routes and visits carefully to avoid spending half your time stuck-

Another option is a motorcycle taxi, known locally as a “boda boda”.

The trip to Uganda includes a very special activity: visiting mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This impressive rainforest in southern Uganda is home to just over half the world’s mountain gorillas. The excursion can last several hours and is one of Africa’s most authentic adventures. Bwindi lives up to its name: the mountains form a dense, dark-green wall contrasting with farmland and meadows.

The forests can only be reached on foot.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has four viewing areas: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Buhoma is easiest; Ruhija and Rushaga are moderately difficult; Nkuringo is challenging but has the most spectacular scenery. Walks are guided in groups of up to eight tourists.

The trek begins many hours before tourists reach the meeting point. Rangers follow the tracks left overnight by different gorilla families. As the groups gather, the guides receive information to start the walk. The terrain is demanding, but the effort, scratches, muddy slips and sweat are worth it.

Being just a few metres from a silverback makes your hair stand on end.

You are initially told to stay at least seven metres away, although gorillas do not always respect that distance. Follow every instruction from your guide and take precautions, such as avoiding eye contact with the legendary silverbacks. Visits to each family last one hour, a limit strictly enforced, so make the most of the time.

Sitting there, a few meters from the big Silverback male and his entire family is one of those once-in-a-lifetime feelings. Incredible!
