Situated between Moldova and Ukraine, this narrow strip of land on the banks of the Dniester River became independent after the demise of the Soviet Union. Although officially part of Moldova, in practice it functions as an independent state.

The usual gateway is the capital, Tiraspol, just over 1 hour by road from Chișinău. You need your passport and must complete a simple border procedure.

Traveling to Transnistria is safe and allows you to discover a unique reality: Soviet monuments, communist symbols still present in everyday life and an atmosphere that seems to have frozen in time.

Another curious detail is its own currency, the transnistrian ruble, which can only be used within the territory. Therefore, it is advisable to carry cash for travel expenses.

Short stays require no visa, but you receive a temporary entry permit whose conditions must be observed throughout the visit.
