A journey through the most spectacular salt flats on our planet.
The crossing of the Andean highlands is more than a geographical journey: it connects us with otherworldly landscapes and ancient cultures. Across Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, salt flats, volcanoes and deserts create scenery that seems to come from another planet.

The crossing of the Andean highlands is one of South America’s most spectacular routes. Over more than 3,000 kilometres, it connects Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, revealing extreme landscapes and ancestral cultures.
A trip through the most spectacular salt flats in the world

- Salinas Grandes (Argentina): a white sea of salt stretching to the horizon, surrounded by multicoloured mountains and villages preserving their Andean character.
- Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia): the largest salt desert on the planet, famous for its mirror effect during the rainy season, which turns the landscape into an infinite reflection of the sky.
- Salar de Atacama (Chile): flamingo habitat and high-altitude lagoons in the heart of the world’s driest desert.
Argentina’s Puna: a journey to another planet

The downside of having many kilometres behind you is losing the ability to be surprised. Our recent journey through the Argentine Puna had exactly the opposite effect
There we discover an exceptional landscape: vast and almost empty, at more than 4,000 metres above sea level
From this experience we redesigned the route “Crossing the Altiplano: the Argentine Puna, Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert”, incorporating Tolar Grande and its surroundings. The result is a more complete and coherent journey, which reinforces its geographical and exploratory character.
Argentina: the immensity of the Puna
The highland crossing begins at Salta, gateway to the Calchaquíes Valleys, with colonial villages, vineyards and living traditions. From there one ascends towards the Puna Argentina, a remote land of volcanoes, salt flats and red deserts. Places such as Tolar Grande and the enigmatic Mina Julia reveal the hardship and beauty of life here.
Bolivia: Salar de Uyuni and the colourful lagoons
Crossing into Bolivia, the landscape changes into the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. In the rainy season, its mirror effect is an incomparable spectacle. The route continues towards the Sud Lipez, with high-altitude lagoons such as Laguna Colorada, surrounded by flamingos and multicoloured mountains.
Chile: the Atacama Desert
The final stage leads to the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, where we visit the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, Valley of the Moon and the Tatio geysers. Chile's desert surprises visitors with its varied landscapes and the cultural richness of Atacameño communities.
