Travelling to Thailand at Christmas is an excellent choice. Pleasant weather and a festive spirit create a magical atmosphere for enjoying unique cultural events. In the north, the Akha live modestly in small tribal communities in the forested mountains, something special in this rapidly developing country.
Of Chinese and Tibetan origin, the Akha have migrated for centuries across the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, preserving traditions and rituals that have lasted for generations. Globalization and modernity have begun to threaten the way of life that distinguishes them. So, come meet them before they disappear.
This Christmas trip to Thailand explores the region’s landscapes and offers an insight into the Akha community’s way of life.

Meeting with the Akha
We believe balance is essential on a cultural immersion trip. We have therefore spent considerable time developing a hiking programme that connects travellers closely with the fascinating, slowly disappearing culture of villages in northern Thailand. To maintain a conscious and sustainable approach, we ensure that we always have the company of a local Akha guide, in collaboration with a Thai guide from the area. In addition, we actively involve local communities in the planning of the itinerary, thus ensuring the maximum participation of locals and promoting respect and preservation of local customs.

The main purpose of this immersion program is not only to connect travelers with a culture in the process of disappearing, but also to contribute positively, wherever possible, to the life of the local population. We hope you enjoy this unique and enriching experience.
The Akha Headdresses
The Akha are known for their rich culture, especially their distinctive headdresses. More than accessories, these are living expressions of Akha history and resilience in the face of modern change.
Akha headdresses are masterpieces of skill and patience. Each tells a story, reflecting the wearer’s social position, marital status and artistic skill. The intricate colours and details draw the eye and reveal the Akha’s deep connection with nature.

Accommodation in the Akha community
During the trek, you sleep in shared spaces in an Akha hut. These traditional local buildings have raised floors and are usually made of bamboo or wood. Mattresses, mosquito nets, cushions and some blankets are provided, but bring a sleeping bag liner or lightweight sleeping bag. European-style toilets are in an outbuilding. A good torch or head torch is essential at night: the generator runs only until a set time, after which there is no electricity. Showers are available, using cold rainwater.

Featured cities on this trip
Bangkok
Order within chaos: a city moving 24 hours a day.
In Bangkok, you will find a mixture of modernity and tradition. On the one hand, there are bright skyscrapers, high-end shopping malls and lively nightlife. On the other hand, the city houses ancient temples, colorful street markets and a culture rooted in history.

Chaotic traffic is an integral part of the Bangkok experience, but despite this, the city operates surprisingly efficiently. The markets offer a vision of local life and varied Thai cuisine. Street food is another gem of Bangkok, with stalls serving delicious dishes at any time of day or night.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Lanna, is a destination known for its quiet atmosphere and its ability to offer a relaxing experience. Unlike bustling Bangkok, Chiang Mai presents a more leisurely pace of life and an environment surrounded by lush nature.
Chiang Dao
In Chiang Dao, immersion in rural life provides a valuable lesson on harmony between villagers and their natural environment. From the traditions of the hill tribes to the simplicity of everyday life, this experience reveals how the local community has prospered in balance with the lush nature around them, giving visitors a unique perspective on Thai authenticity.
