Croatia opens its borders to tourism

The pandemic situation is under control and we are following it closely. We can change the itinerary at the last minute if necessary, and the health situation demands it.

Croatia has begun easing the social distancing measures introduced to limit the spread of COVID-19. The cautious reopening of borders is aimed at facilitating economic activity, investment and reviving the tourism industry which is an important source of income for the country.

Few countries have as many World Heritage Sites concentrated in one place as Croatia.

Croatia has so far recorded fewer than 2,500 coronavirus cases, less than 100 deaths and more than 80 per cent of those infected have already recovered. With these figures in hand, the Croatian government has eased social distancing measures and resumed intercity public transport by air, road and rail, as well as boat connections to the islands.

Update of 30/05/2020

As announced, Croatia opens its borders for citizens of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia and Germany, who from yesterday (29/05) will be able to enter Croatia without restrictions. Tourists and entrepreneurs from all other EU/EEA countries We'll have to wait until June 15th. to have the same conditions.

When can we travel to Croatia?

Although nothing specific has yet been reported on the possibility of start travelling to Croatia, this is expected by late June or early July, depending on the pandemic situation.

With regard to international tourism, Croatia wants to sign an agreement to allow visitors from five European countries from next week, namely 1 June: Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia. It appears that Croatia will not require a negative COVID test to be submitted to enter the country. The rest of EU citizens will have to wait until 15 June to have the same conditions.

For those who want to discover Croatia, we have two trips ready for when travel becomes possible, following all recommended health measures.

The east of Croatia is home to the country’s greenest, most mountainous region, its wildest and least-known area. On this trip we will explore Paklenica National Park and the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes by bike and on foot, finishing in Zagreb. This cycling trip follows paved roads with practically no traffic, and the stages are short and of easy to moderate difficulty.

Plitvice National Park
The park is naturally divided into the Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes. In the upper section, we find a total of 12 lakes: Proscansko, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Big Lake, a small lake, Vir, Galovac, Milino, Gradinsko Lake, Big Burget and Kozjak. The many caves in this area have earned it the name “Park of the Caves”.

Plitvice, followed by small lakes, waterfalls and streams, was declared a Natural Park by the authorities of the former Yugoslavia in 1949, and a nature reserve by UNESCO since 1979.

Walks through the National Parks and Medieval Adriatic Cities

Few countries have as many World Heritage Sites in such a small area as Croatia. On this itinerary we will tour some of its main national parks, Plitvice, Paklenica and Krka and enjoy a rich variety of landscapes and nature. We will combine these excursions with visits to historic Adriatic cities, open-air settings for many recent films and series.

This trip combines culture and nature. The best way to observe the parks you visit is to hike. All are easy to moderate, lasting no more than about 3 hours. On our day in Plitvice, we will spend almost 5 hours exploring the park, combining walks with some boat journeys.

When can we travel abroad?

With travel disrupted and COVID-19 health policies constantly changing in each country, we will update this article as often as possible to show which borders remain closed, where you can travel and when you can go.
