Bulgaria has begun easing its lockdown as new infections have declined. Late on 21 May, Bulgarian Health Minister Kiril Ananiev announced that representatives of businesses registered in the EU and Schengen area could enter Bulgaria without the mandatory 14-day quarantine.

"We agreed, together with Greece, that from 1 June we will allow trips without the mandatory quarantine of 14 days for people travelling for business, family or humanitarian reasons," Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told journalists.

The Prime Minister said it had been agreed that as of 1 June, mutual travel with Greece and Serbia should be allowed without the mandatory quarantine of 14 days. Borissov also announced that Bulgaria was currently in discussions with Austria and Germany on the reduction of travel restrictions.

Border controls remain in place in most Balkan, Eastern and Central European states, although Serbia, Croatia and Hungary have issued new rules allowing entrepreneurs and some other categories to enter for urgent reasons.

The national operational headquarters, which is responsible for coordinating measures to prevent coronavirus in Bulgaria, said in an information session that the tourism season summer could start on July 1st of this year, although no final decision has yet been made.

The winter season was interrupted on March 17 as a result of the coronavirus outbreak and the summer season has already been significantly reduced, as it usually begins in mid to late May.
