Slovakia gradually opens borders to tourism

Is Slovakia a safe destination?

Slovakia is another European Union country that has suffered relatively little from coronavirus. The authorities' swift action as the pandemic spread in other European countries effectively contained its spread. With hygiene and social distancing measures similar to any European Union country, Slovakia has moved forward and is already preparing to welcome travellers.

Are there suitable routes in Slovakia?

Our tours in Slovakia focus on exploring the Slovak Carpathians, so they take place entirely in natural settings with few other travellers. The rural guesthouses on these routes are small, and their staff have received specific training to ensure appropriate safety and distancing measures.

What are our trips to Slovakia like?

Our trips are aimed at anyone with mountain hiking experience, enthusiasm for walking and a good level of fitness. Daily walks last 6 to 7 hours including stops, with no more than 700 metres of ascent.

All walks begin on broad tracks and paths. As we climb, these become mountain trails with roots, rocks and some loose ground. You should be used to mountain walking.

Trekking boots and good warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Timeline for isolation measures

From 13 March onwards, entry into Slovakia is permitted only for foreign Slovak citizens with proof of residence in Slovakia and other foreign citizens under certain conditions.

From 6 April, travellers must register with the Slovak authorities 72 hours before travelling to Slovakia, then enter mandatory quarantine at a government facility for 14 days on arrival. After a negative COVID-19 test, the remainder of the 14 days may be spent self-isolating at home.

People in Slovakia can travel to eight countries without having to enter the state quarantine if they return within 24 hours, starting on 21 May.

In accordance with the new public order of the Public Health Authority, all persons travelling to Slovakia, i.e. both Slovak citizens and foreigners, are obliged to be isolated in State quarantine centres. This measure is effective from 21 May 2020, 7.00 a.m.

Since May 23, the Slovak government is in the process of implementing a home quarantine system controlled by a mobile phone app – not yet 100% operational – and should read carefully and follow the instructions published in the Slovak government website (currently only in Slovak) before the trip.

When can we travel abroad?

Although nothing specific has yet been reported on the possibility of start travelling abroad, it is expected that it will be by the end of June or early July depending on the phase of each autonomous community.

With travel disrupted and COVID-19 health policies constantly changing in each country, we will update this article as often as possible to show which borders remain closed, where you can travel and when you can go.
