Difficulty / Conditions of travel

Several walks are planned on this route. The chimpanzee trek is not especially difficult, although sometimes there is some elevation gain to tackle. In the case of trekking to see mountain gorillas, the terrain may present more difficulties because be wet and slippery.

Some travellers have suggested that it is not a bad idea bring gardening-style gloves to avoid scratches and stinging nettles when walking through the forest; traditional wellington boots are even recommended as the best footwear. It is also a good idea bring a rain poncho or waterproof clothing.

Despite all this, the trip may still be suitable for almost anyone. However, travellers must explicitly accept the country’s limited resources for dealing with unforeseen events and you will need patience and a positive attitude so that the country's attractions outweigh the difficult moments and make the trip worthwhile.

Practicalities

Currency
The official currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). The approximate exchange rate is 1 € = 4,150 UGX, although it fluctuates considerably.
Euros can now be exchanged relatively easily, as can US dollar cash. In both cases, banknotes must be recent (issued after 2009), unmarked and untorn.
Larger banknotes of 50 and 100 usually secure a better exchange rate. Credit cards and travellers’ cheques are of little use outside large cities. Some Kampala banks have ATMs where credit cards can be used to withdraw cash.

Indicative prices
The price difference is basically given by the type of establishment where meals and drinks are bought or consumed.
A restaurant’s tourist menu costs from 6,000 UGX for local-style food to 30,000 UGX in the best establishments. A soft drink or mineral water costs 600 to 1,500 UGX; beer 1,700 to 3,500 UGX; coffee or tea 1,000 to 3,500 UGX

Tips
It is customary, though not compulsory, to tip around 10% in restaurants and bars. For porters and anyone providing a service, a tip of approximately 1–2 USD is appropriate.
The local staff (guide, driver...) are equally important to ensure the smooth running of the trip, and everyone always expects a tip. The amount collected shall be divided equally between them.

Climate
Most of Uganda has a tropical climate, averaging 26°C during the day and 16°C at night. The warmest period is December to February, when daytime temperatures range from 27–29°C. In the mountains, conditions vary and nights are quite cold. In the south, the rainy season falls in April–May and November. In the north, the wet season runs from April to October.

Electricity
Electricity is 240 V / 50 Hz. The grid is fairly extensive, but outages are common in rural areas outside larger towns. Sockets are mainly type G, so an adaptor is needed.
