Sumatra. The Minangkabau: a Muslim matriarchal community

In the Muslim community, it is women who transmit the lineage from generation to generation. With more than four million people, they are located west of the island of Sumatra, and their ancestral traditions, known as adat, place mothers at the centre of society.

Among the Minangkabau, women inherit the family home, land and property, passed from mother to daughter. Consensus and agreement between women and men form the community’s social foundation.

Minangkabau women will introduce us to these traditions, sharing their daily lives and traditional matriarchal way of life within a Muslim society.

A trip designed for those with an interest in minority cultures and their customs and way of life.
