Iceland reopens its borders on 15 June

Iceland reopens its borders from 15 June

The government of Iceland announced that it reopens the country to international tourism. This is the first country to officially announce that it is opening its borders to travellers. The reason is simple; today there are only 15 active cases, they have been without new cases for several days, and they have proven to be able to handle this crisis with excellent results.

"With just three cases of coronavirus diagnosed in May, we are again ready to open our doors to the world" – says Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson, Foreign Minister of the Iceland.

In the same note he stated that the Icelandic borders would soon again allow tourist trips to the island with some restrictions. As of today, Iceland has 1,801 cases of coronavirus, of which almost all patients have already recovered, with a few active cases remaining.

When will it be possible to return to travel to Iceland For sightseeing?

According to the note issued by the Prime Minister, Katrin Jakobsdóttir, it will be possible to travel back to Iceland from 15 June 2020.

What measures will the government take to control travellers arriving in Iceland?

In the same note, the government indicates that upon arrival in the country, travellers must show a valid certificate proving that they do not have the virus, or to undergo a test with immediate results. Travellers providing a certificate or passing the test will not need to quarantine. It is not yet clear whether the Icelandic government or travellers themselves will pay for the test.

It could be a wonderful year to discover the destination

Although this is good news for the industry, they know occupancy will be much lower than in previous years. The government has pulled out all the stops, spending more than 9 million euros on a campaign, but they know that will be far short of those 2 million tourists that they had been receiving in recent years.

“Imagine travelling to Iceland. Now imagine it with half as many tourists. This opportunity has not existed for years,” says our itinerary planner, Sela Jiménez.

A country with very good numbers

Iceland holds the world record of testing for COVID-19 and has fully controlled the pandemic within its borders. The country began to test its population massively a month before the first patient was confirmed on its territory and has managed to control the pandemic among the population of the island. These massive tests helped stop the spread of COVID-19 because they were able to detect in advance the infected people who were either asymptomatic (43% of the cases) or believed they had a common flu.
