Montenegro opens borders to tourism

On 25 May, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dusko Markovic, stated that there had been no new coronavirus cases in the country for 20 days. To underline the point, he removed his protective mask before the press conference.

Montenegro opens its borders to tourists from countries with low levels of coronavirus infection.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro said on Monday (25/05) that the borders open from 1 June for citizens of countries that meet the entry criteria of the Montenegrin health authorities: have at present up to 25 patients with covid-19 per 100,000 people.

The government of Montenegro will open borders to foreign citizens at the end of May and begin the tourist season, following entry restrictions that were decreed on 30 March. However, it is expected that the visitors come only from countries with low levels of infection for the covid-19.

"We will open up borders to countries with a similar epidemiological state," he said. "We will not ask for special tests, everyone will receive clear instructions on what awaits them in the country and what regulations they must respect."

The country managed to defeat the coronavirus in only 69 days since the discovery of the first patient.

The last recorded case of coronavirus in Montenegro was in early May. The country declared itself free of COVID-19 on Sunday 24/05.

Is Montenegro a safe destination?

Albania and Montenegro have among Europe’s lowest infection rates. Early government measures contained the pandemic effectively, and current precautions follow WHO criteria, resembling those of European Union countries.

Does Montenegro have suitable itineraries?

Even with its tourism boom, Montenegro remains apart from mass tourism. Our routes visit quiet places and, depending on the itinerary, run partly or entirely through natural areas with little contact with other travellers. All local guesthouses on this route have received specific safety and hygiene training. The countries commonly combined in our itineraries (North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro) are in a similar, if not identical, situation, and land border crossings are guaranteed on the scheduled dates.

When can we travel abroad?

Although nothing specific has yet been reported on the possibility of start travelling abroad, it is expected that it will be by the end of June or early July depending on the phase of each autonomous community.

With travel disrupted and COVID-19 health policies constantly changing in each country, we will update this article as often as possible to show which borders remain closed, where you can travel and when you can go.
