A new itinerary for the 2015 eclipse

Observing the 2015 total solar eclipse and the northern lights in the Faroe Islands

Next March, in the subarctic Faroe Islands, we will have the chance to observe two of the most impressive natural phenomena visible from our planet: a total eclipse of the sun and the spectacle of the Northern Lights.
As well as the unique opportunity to witness a total eclipse and the northern lights, this trip offers spectacular landscapes of rugged islands: a paradise for hikers, naturalists and bird lovers.

In the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic, the subarctic Faroe Islands lies northwest of Scotland, halfway between Norway and Iceland. A frequent base for polar cruises in the 19th and 20th centuries, its waters were the setting for numerous oceanographic studies by polar explorer J. B. Charcot (1867–1936) aboard the Pourquoi Pas? Its geology and wildlife are exceptional, with fewer than 50,000 people living across the archipelago’s 18 islands.

If we asked the veterans, surely most would agree that the Northern Lights are visually almost as spectacular as the eclipses total. This time, weather permitting, we can enjoy both phenomena on a single trip.

Travelling with a specialist guide is one of the best ways to add value to our trip. Having someone explain the phenomena or surroundings helps us enjoy them much more, as well as providing tips and guidance for observing the Total solar eclipse.
