Testing the equipment

Today I rediscovered a new part of my body, the toes!

Last week I visited a shop specialising in athletics equipment. I was amazed by the space devoted to socks. Thousands of socks on display, in different sizes and colours and with a thousand and one features. Antibacterial, anti-blister and anti-chafing socks; compression, padded, recovery, anatomical and breathable socks. Faced with all these discoveries, I had to try a pair. I chose white Injinji toe socks.

I put them on today and went for a run. My body quickly settled into each step: right, left, right… The familiar bounce from one foot to the other, marked by an inner drum. Yet something felt different, disrupting the usual routine in a fresh, even amusing way. Suddenly, I realised that while all my joints tried to coordinate, a distant part of my body had declared independence. A secret party was happening at the ends of my feet. Playful toes danced together to reggaeton or salsa, some kind of tropical rhythm. The toe socks had given them independence and a freedom of movement I doubt they had ever known. After a while, order returned. The liberated toes calmed down and became part of my body again, all following the running rhythm in unison: more serious and boring, but coordinated.
