Shirakawago is a beautiful village of Japan in Gifu Prefecture. It is known for its many well-preserved traditional wooden houses with steep thatched roofs. Their slope allows the winter snow to slide off without accumulating and endangering the buildings.
This style of houses is known in Japan like gassho-zukuri. Buildings can be up to four floors and be about 18 meters long by 10 meters wide. Above all, on the top floor, there is a space in which the inhabitants of Shirakawago They raised silkworms.
In 1995 the UNESCO declared Shirakawago a World Heritage Site, along with the neighbouring village of Gokayama. Amazing place, isn't it?
What to see in Shirakawa-go
You can enter several village restaurants to see inside these buildings, or stay in accommodation housed in the traditional gassho-zukuri. A tour of the gasshō-zukuri village’s open-air museum is also recommended, as is a visit to the Japanese paper factory in Gokayama. And of course enjoy the landscape and the surroundings of this enclave surrounded by mountains.
