Thailand: travel independently or join a group?

Travelling to Thailand on my own, in a small group or on an individual trip?

A question we may ask if we want to spend our holidays in Thailand and enjoy the best possible trip while spending as little as possible. In this post, we compare the options from our perspective at Viajes Tuareg.

Thailand, holiday destination

Thailand is perfect for a holiday away from daily routine. Numerous flight options provide easy connections from across Europe, and Thai people are known for welcoming visitors with a smile.

In Northern Thailand, the jungle and ethnic minorities are undisputed protagonists. In the south the beaches and social life attract many visitors from all over the world who want quiet holidays in a natural environment similar to that of the film "The Island".

To design this comparison and be able to choose between a trip to Thailand: independent travel, small-group travel or a private trip We will analyze 4 factors that we consider the most important:

Thailand: independent travel, a small group or a private trip? Flights

Price is a key factor when choosing a flight, but long connections and waiting times also matter when planning a Thailand trip. Saving 50 euros at the cost of 9 hours in an airport is hardly a saving. In relation to the trip's total length, that lost day can be very expensive.

  • When it is travels independently to Thailand, affordable flights can be found depending on the season. Low-season fares can be up to 40% cheaper than high-season fares. In high season, limited flight availability may require itinerary changes.
  • When travel in a small group, flights are usually negotiated. Travel agencies agree prices with airlines well in advance, based on scheduled departures. In low season, we keep the same airline, while in high season, seats are negotiated, reserved and paid for in advance.
  • For private trips (from 2 people), flights are arranged around travellers’ preferred dates. Agencies can find combinations of flights and times that suit the itinerary and budget, with flexibility over airlines and connections.

Travelling independently in low season can cost about the same as booking through an agency. In high season, affordable flights matching holiday dates are easier to find through a small group trip or an individual itinerary planned with expert advice.

Thailand: independent, organised or private travel? Routes and activities

A Thailand trip, especially for first-time visitors, should last at least two weeks, including several days in Bangkok, time in the rural north and a few days in the south for beaches or activities.

It is difficult to assess whether an itinerary is good or bad without first knowing it, but part of the excitement of the journey lies in discovering it for yourself.

Itineraries in Thailand

If we design our own itinerary and everything goes perfectly – flights coordinate and hotels meet expectations – the trip becomes an exclusive, unique, tailor-made experience, making it “the best trip to Thailand in the world” from our point of view.

On the other hand, the group travel with a planned itinerary, we benefit from the experience of previous travellers and reduce the risk of mistakes. Many factors can affect a journey, whether independent or in a group. Group travel provides a local team to help when the unexpected happens.

In the case individual trips, as a couple, with family or friends, itineraries are tailored to each party. They reflect travellers’ preferences and pace, combining independent travel’s flexibility with a local agency’s support, minimising risk and making the most of the experience.

Activities in Thailand

When choosing  activities on our own, you may discover hidden gems beyond the usual tourist routes. Chiang Mai offers many trekking options, while southern beaches near Krabi provide countless opportunities to find paradise. But choosing poorly can also mean being scammed, losing your money and missing the activity.

On the other hand, by participating in  organised activities by a travel agency, we benefit from its experience in choosing the best options. Its local partners know what to do, where and when. Bad weather or other factors can affect planned activities, but local expertise helps us find suitable alternatives.

For the  private trips (from 2 people), activities are selected in more detail with travellers, including unusual experiences that might not suit larger groups. The agency ensures quality and safety, with alternatives for unforeseen problems so the trip meets expectations.

Thailand: independent, organised group or private travel? Schedules and waiting times

The waiting times to the travel independently are usually shorter. Travelling with more than four people means waiting. With your partner or best friend, waits are minimal, such as taking turns to shower or have breakfast. At airports, you can use every minute, though squeezing in one last activity risks missing your flight.

In the organised travel (small groups), waiting times are usually longer. Morning gatherings and toilet stops multiply with each person. However, group travel saves time arranging services such as hotel check-in and check-out, transfers and entry to natural parks.

For the private trips (from 2 people), waiting times are reduced considerably by not depending on a large group. The management of transfers and check-ins remains efficient thanks to the organization of the agency, but the pace is set by the travelers themselves, allowing for greater flexibility and use of time in each place.

The time required to organise an independent trip to Thailand depends on the effort you want to invest. Reviewing travel options takes at least a couple of hours, and finding the perfect flight can take days, before choosing accommodation and activities.

When you book a group or individual Thailand trip with us, we travel agencies spend that time for you ;).

Year after year, we review the routes and listen to travelers to see what we can change or improve.

Thailand independently, in a small group or on a private trip? Accommodation and hotels

Travelling independently or in a small group? Accommodation and hotels
Independent travel or a small group? Viajes Tuareg archive

When  travel independently , you are free to choose the type of accommodation that best suits your preferences and budget, from budget hostels to luxury resorts. However, this requires thorough research and booking management on your own, which can consume time and sometimes not guarantee the expected quality.

On the other hand, the  travel in an organized groupor, hotels are chosen in advance by the travel agency in collaboration with its local partner. At Viajes Tuareg, location is one of our main criteria. In northern trekking areas, where hotels are limited or absent, we prioritise authenticity and interaction with local people.

In the private trips (from 2 people), the selection of accommodations is made according to the specific preferences of the travelers, looking for a balance between quality, location and authenticity. The agency can offer suggestions and book hotels that meet travelers' expectations, ensuring a comfortable and satisfactory stay without the need for travelers to devote time to research and booking.
