The Lost City Teyuna, in Colombia, was a city inhabited by indigenous people Tayrona until around 1600, when wars and disease finally led to its abandonment.
Teyuna was, during its best days, a key settlement for the Tayrona. At 1,300 metres above the Caribbean Sea, it is believed to have housed more than 4,000 people and served as a reference point for smaller settlements throughout the mountains.
As time passed, this city fell into oblivion and was buried in the depths of the jungle. Archaeological explorers rediscovered it by chance 400 years later. Its ruins still reveal remarkable infrastructure: platforms supporting houses, networks of bridges and paths, and water channels that the Tayrona used to protect themselves from heavy torrential rains.
At present, there is no other way to reach the ruins of the city than spending 5 or 6 days walking through dense jungle to reach the stone remains, which reveal what was once a populous, prosperous city in the rainforest.
This one trekking route has been defined by many as one of the most incredible South America. Indeed, few Hiking trails in South America may surpass in beauty and emotion the one that leads through the jungle to the ancient Lost City Teyuna. Tackling demanding climbs and negotiating rivers and bridges are among the challenges along our route, which ends with the ascent of 1,200 steps to the archaeological remains.
