On the route
Cultural Travel
Uzbekistan has a rich architectural and cultural heritage that has fortunately been preserved over the centuries. On this journey we will follow the classic monumental route, visiting the capitals that had their greatest splendor on the ancient silk road. We point out that there are a couple of stages by land that are quite long; to this we must add to the general poor condition of all roads.
Among the cultural activities, we will learn how to cook the national dish of Uzbekistan.

The ecological tragedy of the Aral Sea
Once called a “sea” for its vast size, it became the world’s fourth-largest lake. It has shrunk by three quarters and retreats further from villages and roads each year, leaving a salty sand desert called Aralkum (Akkum—“White Sands”).
Savitsky Art Museum, Nukus, Karakalpakia
The art museum in Nukus houses Central Asia’s finest collection, and one of the most notable in the former Soviet Union. Only a fraction of its roughly 90,000 pieces is displayed. These include more than 15,000 paintings, around half brought there during the communist era by dissident artist and ethnographer Igor Savitsky. Many early 20th-century Russian works did not fit “socialist realism”, but found refuge in these isolated places.
Turkmenistan
Central Asia’s most mysterious and unexplored republic gained notoriety under Saparmyrat Niyazov, who ruled as Turkmenbashi (“leader of the Turkmens”) until his death in 2006. It is an ancient land of spirituality, tradition and natural beauty, from the Silk Road cities of Merv and Kunya-Urgench to the Karakum Desert and the “Door to Hell”.
