The best of travel to the Azores during the time of winter is the lack of other visitors. Hotel occupancy is at its lowest, and few people walk the island’s trails. The weather in the Azores changes constantly. Statistically, autumn and winter have the most rainfall, but rain is never guaranteed.

Viajes Tuareg usually organises trips to the Azores at Christmas and during the December public holiday break.

With autumn’s arrival in mid-October, rough seas usually interrupt ferry connections.

Travelling to the Azores in spring

The Azores’ geographical location brings abundant rain, reflected in lush vegetation that contrasts with the black volcanic terrain. The islands are naturally beautiful, but in spring millions of hydrangeas add an explosion of colour, making the landscapes truly spectacular.

Flora lovers can go on a trip in spring, when the flowers bloom and the air fills with their aromas.

In spring, you can walk the island’s trails more peacefully, without constantly passing other visitors.

Travel to the Azores in summer

Considered by many the best time to visit the Azores, summer offers many advantages for exploring the islands.

June is a very good time: it is one of the driest months, and whale watching is possible.

In early June, the migration routes of sperm whales, rorquals and blue whales converge in the archipelago’s waters. The rains end in May and average temperatures rise to 25°C. Water temperatures exceed 20°C, making this the best time to swim in the sea.

June, July and August generally have better weather, though occasional rain is common. Fog is another important factor when deciding the best time to visit the Azores.

Temperatures in the Azores

The Azores have a subtropical maritime climate with little seasonal temperature variation. Winters are mild and summers moderately warm. Humidity stays high because of the ocean winds that constantly sweep the islands.

In early October, tropical storms begin in the Azores. However, these storms rarely directly affect the island. Winter begins in December and lasts 4 months, until April.
