The Azores archipelago or Madeira? Which Portuguese Atlantic islands should you visit? It is a common question when planning a trip.
If you want to explore the Portuguese islands, bear in mind that they are very different from one another. If you are unsure which to choose, here is some information to help you decide.
It is possible to travel Azores Islands at any time of year. In winter, as on the mainland, there can be cold, stormy days, while summer brings a better chance of sunshine for exploring the island’s trails.
The Azores are temperate and unpredictable. It's never too cold and the weather is constantly changing.
Two years ago, we launched a new hiking route on the beautiful island of Madeira. After successfully leading our well-known “Senderismo nas Leivadas” trip for several years, Filipe, who knows the island’s trails intimately, suggested an exciting challenge for experienced hikers: a traverse from Machico to Porto Moniz, crossing the island’s peaks and central plateau.

In the middle of the Atlantic, far from everything, Madeira rises like a mountain of lava and basalt above the ocean. Its interior is extremely rugged, a labyrinth of green ravines traversed by levadas, the ancient channels that distributed water throughout the island.
