Hiking Sicily’s volcanic peaks — and telling the story so well

We don’t know why. Perhaps it’s the influence of the earth’s forces, the gases released into the atmosphere, or the delicious Sicilian pasta. What we do know is that, for the second time running, the winner of our feedback competition does so with a review of a trip through the peaks of Sicily.

The winner of this fifteenth edition is Aurèlia Manils, for sharing her opinion on trip with Tuareg a Italy to do hiking on the volcanoes of Sicily and in the Aeolian Islands. Here is their feedback.

The best of hiking in Sicily and Aeolian Islands:

The descent down slides of volcanic sand, following our guide Genny’s instructions: knees bent, bum out, and dig your heels into the soft sand as you stride down.

The night descent from Stromboli volcano, like a line of fireflies in the darkness.

Impressions of the trip of interest to other travelers:

Some trips are for seeing, others for living—a small change in words, a huge leap in experience—and this is one you truly live. Aurèlia emphasises that there are trips to see (see in Catalan) and others to live (experience). A single vowel changes, but the difference in experience is enormous. In any case, this trip belongs to the second category, a a trip to experience.

His comment continues as follows:

The Aeolian Islands stages are planned so that the volcano climbs become progressively harder: first Vulcano, then Stromboli and finally Etna. Technical explanations deepen the experience. The settlements at the volcanoes’ feet have an atmosphere of suspended calm that could break at any moment.

From the summits, wind, fog and sulphurous fumaroles remind you that the Earth is alive and nature can still disrupt air traffic more than air traffic controller strikes.

When you come back down, the warm weather and delicious Sicilian pasta are a comfort.

Thank you for your comment, Aurèlia. You win a €200 voucher to use on your next trip.
