We’d like to go back

The exhibition We would like to return is a collection of images and accounts from travellers who visited Mali, Syria, Yemen and Libya between the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s.

At that time, curiosity about new places and different cultures grew exponentially. Travelling off the beaten track became more common, and new destinations appeared in travel agency brochures.

...and on three beautiful camels we explored ancient Palmyra. Queen Zenobia accompanied us as we dreamed of being explorers in her caravan. Palmyra, Syria, 2009. Ángela Blanco.

When we look back, what we remember most from those trips is not the landscapes or monuments but the people we met: drivers, guides… or the family who invited us home for dinner. For many of us, meeting them changed the way we understood the world.

Today, the situation has been reversed: parts of the Sahara and the Middle East have disappeared from the tourism map. Conflicts have forced many of those people to flee their homes, becoming what we now call refugees.

We don’t know what became of Mufta, who guided us through Libya’s desert and told us wonderful stories around the fire.

The exhibition “We would like to return”  reminds us that the places many refugees arriving in Europe call home were, until recently, our holiday destinations, and that the stranger now crossing the Mediterranean in a small boat could be the driver with whom we shared so many adventures and happy moments

At Viatges Tuareg, we have always believed that places are above all about people. Now more than ever.

They want to come here. We want to return there. When both wishes have been fulfilled, we will live in a better world

Others have been luckier than Mufta. Hayane accompanied us in Syria; he was the liaison with the Bedouins of the Raqqa region and Deir Ez Zor. He currently works with us in Oman
