What is the best time to travel to Greenland?
Summer is certainly the best time to travel to Greenland
Greenland’s entire coastal strip, especially in the south, is free of ice and snow in summer, so our hikes pass through snow-free areas of willow and dwarf birch.
Making the most of the long summer daylight hours, it is possible to undertake treks varied, with elevation changes of 50 to 550 m and around 2 to 6 hours of actual walking, all in daylight. Most routes are cross-country, as there are no tracks or trails in Greenland, but walking poses no difficulty in summer.
Walks and luggage in Greenland
For walks, we carry a daypack with some food and a warm layer. Water is not always needed, as in Greenland you can drink water from any source. Luggage is transported by 4×4 and boat throughout the route.
You do not need to carry your luggage, but you must help load it into the boats and vehicles.
The longest route to transport all baggage is at the Qaleragdlit glacier, approximately 200 m.
Bear in mind that these trips are not particularly comfortable and may sometimes involve basic conditions.

In southern Greenland, the coast breaks into fjords and islets, creating magnificent landscapes that open to visitors during the Arctic summer. This route offers a 160 km kayaking journey; travelling independently, with no support boat to carry the luggage. We will paddle among icebergs and glacier fronts descending from the mysterious ice sheet, watching a wide variety of wildlife.
The route takes place in an expedition environment.
Covid-19 in Greenland
Greenland has the situation under control and on 25 May, it had only one active case of COVID-19. In an extension of the Danish government's border closures (for foreigners who have no recognized or essential purpose to enter Denmark), Greenland police have declared that the borders with the rest of the Danish kingdom are closed.
On 14 May, Greenland's government presented a three-phase plan to reopen Greenland to visitors.
The plan proposes the phased opening and return of visitors, provided that the current conditions are maintained and the recommendations currently followed by all Greenlanders are complied with: stay at home as much as possible.
When does the first phase start?
The first phase begins on 15 June. 600 passengers will be able to fly to Greenland every week.
What conditions are necessary to reach the first phase?
- The ratio of new cases to hospital discharges must be below 1, and no more than 5% of the population can be infected.
- Pre-existing conditions should be maintained and new cases observed. Health regulations may be adjusted in the coming weeks if deemed necessary.
What are the entry requirements?
- At check-in, you must present a negative Covid-19 test taken no more than 5 days earlier.
- Confirmation of the completed Sumut form, stating where you will visit and whom you will meet.
What are the rules when you get to Greenland?
- Upon arrival in Greenland, the traveller must go directly to quarantine.
- Five days after arrival, a new test is carried out at a regional hospital. Testing is not available at accommodation, except in Kangerlussuaq. Travellers must therefore quarantine for five days before travelling between towns.
- If tested negative again, the quarantine ends.
What are the quarantine rules?
- You can go for a walk and have contact with the people you live with.
- You may not visit friends or family, take public transport or taxis, or work. Avoid grocery shopping as far as possible.
What if I have symptoms?
- Anyone with symptoms should be tested
How can I leave Greenland if I have the virus?
- If you become infected in Greenland, you must be prepared to bear your own expenses associated with hospitalization and return home.
- If you're a resident who comes out of Greenland and gets infected, you won't be able to return to the country until you have a negative test for COVID-19.
