The best street food in the world

There are two things we love when we travel; one is to get lost in the places we visit and the other, go to sleep on a full stomach.

When we travel around the world, we can enter a good restaurant and spend a little money but, to be honest, we prefer to walk the streets in search of the best street food in the world, authentic local cuisine.

Here are some of the the best street foods of the world, so you can taste them on your travels or try cooking them at home (Viajes Tuareg cannot take responsibility for your culinary skills):

China - Baozi

Greece – Gyros

There is no need travel to Greece to eat a gyro, although the best are undoubtedly those we find wandering through the streets of Greek cities.

For a great gyros, we need good pita bread, roast lamb or pork and the distinctive tzatziki sauce (yoghurt with garlic, mint and cucumber). We can then add something fresh, such as onion, lettuce or tomato (or all three!).

Japan – Takoyaki

Takoyaki (たこ焼き) is a small fritter made from flour-and-egg batter, filled with grilled octopus and served with sauce. In fact, “tako’ is octopus, and "yaki’ is griddled. Although this Japanese street food originally comes from the Kansai region, is now eaten almost throughout the country, and is delicious!

Sicily – Arancini

If you have walked through Sicily’s streets, you have probably seen arancini at many food stalls. Their shape may vary depending on where on the island you eat them, but they all have one thing in common, they are delicious.

If you want to prepare them at home, the basic ingredients are meat (the one you like the most), rice, cheese and saffron. You can add more ingredients, depending on your tastes. Then you'll have to shape it and fry it like it's a croquette.

I'm sure our groups of hiking in Sicily, stop for arancini to replenish their energy.

Indonesia - Satay

Although currently eaten throughout Asia, Satay is the typical street food from Sumatra area, Indonesia. These chicken or fish skewers are cooked over embers on bamboo or coconut sticks. Their usual yellow colour comes from the turmeric seasoning.

Sri Lanka - Kottu Roti

This one traditional dish of the streets of Sri Lanka has become very popular in recent years. It is a complete meal in one dish and relatively easy to prepare. Watching it being made in Sri Lanka is quite a spectacle: all the ingredients go onto a hot griddle and are chopped at lightning speed.

On the one hand we have the Kottu, a mixture of vegetables including red and green peppers and onion, with minced meat or chicken (or fish), eggs and noodles. Add chillies for a spicy touch. Then there is the Roti, the bread served with kottu and many other Sri Lankan meals. It resembles pita bread.

If you have travelled with us to Sri Lanka, surely you have tasted the cuisine of our "Chef Tuareg", certainly one of the strengths of the trip.

And now that you know what is the best street food in the world and where to find it, what do you feel like doing most: eating or travelling?
