At the start of the European summer, rivers in the Amazon basin have risen by up to 15 metres vertically, flooding the valley and the humid tropical forest. Those who travel to the Amazon at this time will find a unique landscape, very different from the months when the water level is low.
Travelling through the Amazon in summer means high water and flooded forest: the igapó
Put it in your diary: on Thursday 16 January at 19:00, we will meet by video call to discover the Puranga Flow project and our trip to the Brazilian Amazon. Register using the form.
For lovers of unspoilt nature, we have organized this trip to Brazil in October travelling up the Amazon River from Manaus to the Anavilhanas Archipelago, deep in the jungle.
> Small Group Trip to Brazil > Amazon expedition trip: 13 days > Trip departing on 13 October
On board a regional boat equipped for trips and expeditions in the Amazon, we will travel up its tributaries to meet indigenous communities, see pink dolphins and take canoe trips through the flooded forest.

Ships have all possible comforts for expeditions of this type and we are accompanied by a crew and, at times, local guides who will introduce us to life in the Amazon river communities. They usually have two decks, and cabins with toilets can be booked depending on the size of the group. Built from wood, they are simple and comfortable.

The Amazon River is Manaus’s main transport artery.
The Amazon is immense and unstoppable. Leaving its main channel behind, we find the jungle we were hoping for among the tributaries and waterways.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES
Upriver, we stop at several Indigenous communities. Travellers can observe the difference between those where NGOs are present

During the trip, we anchor the boat in quiet stretches of the Apuau River, which will serve as our “base camp” for several days.
At night, those who wish can leave the safety of the boat and camp in the jungle: an explosion of sounds, smells, darkness and caimans… a real face-to-face encounter with nature.
When you go into the Anavilhanas National Park, we pass countless tiny islands and mangroves, where white-sand beaches emerge during the dry season. At this point, the Rio Negro reaches 27 km across and looks almost like an open sea. Nearly 400 islands are scattered along 90 km, forming the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. The flow is immense, and take note: the river is around 300 metres deep!
We set off from Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, and travel up the Rio Negro towards the area between the Cueiras and Apuaú rivers. It is on these tributaries that we will have a truly intimate, immersive jungle experience, something difficult to achieve on the vast Amazon that runs further downstream, always with more boat traffic and a larger population.
On our expedition, we will travel with guide Enric Marsà, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years and knows the terrain extremely well.
Some sayings and proverbs are wrong. Dust you are, and to dust you shall return. Wrong. We are water. Water is more abundant in our bodies than any other substance. And we need it. Water is life. Seas dominate the Earth’s surface, and life thrives along their shores. Then there are lakes and rivers, often the cradles of civilisations, or humanity’s first “highways”, connecting distant civilisations.
Travel across rivers, lakes and seas
In your next holidays We suggest a series of trips in which water is both our means of travel and the star attraction. By canoe, by kayak or sailing. In the south, close to the North Pole, on rivers or out at sea…
