Where to go in summer | Recommended trip: Albania

Summer recommendations: Albania and the Balkans

The mix of bunkers, fourth-hand Mercedes-Benz cars, codes of honour (the incomparable Kanun) and former communists we encounter leaves no one indifferent; Tirana could even be called modern (it is!), but What we like most about Albania are the scenes that remind us of our own past, not so many years ago. Mmm... those generous servings of aniseed spirits and liqueurs at the village bar.

Travel to Gabon | The Last African Eden

“The last African Eden” is how an institution as prestigious as National Geographic describes Gabon.

On this itinerary we will take you to discover the parks that deserve to be called “Eden”, exploring them in the best possible way: on jungle walks and boat trips through their lake systems. Encounters and ceremonies with the Babongo Pygmies, a traditional bwiti ceremony and the Punu’s Mukudji mask ritual will add a cultural dimension to the trip.

Timkat in Axum: celebrating Epiphany in Ethiopia

Emperor Fasilides converted Gondar his capital in 1632. He then ordered the construction of a large pool for swimming and celebrating the religious ceremonies. The pools have survived to this day and have become the site of the celebration of the Timkat. Just as in other cities, in Gondar Ethiopians bring water from the river for the ceremony where they are completely immersed in holy water.

We have prepared this departure to Ethiopia on 17 January  proposing Timkat in Axum as a more traditional alternative, less affected by tourism, an alternative to crowded Lalibela that is increasingly popular with visitors to Gondar. In Axum we find lthe authenticity of Ethiopian religious feeling and the remains of the ancient capital of the Aksumite Empire, including its fields of funerary stelae.

Often confused with the Arawak peoples, the indigenous Arhuaco communities inhabit the highlands of the Sierra de Santa Marta, in the valleys of the Chichicua, Piedras and Ariguaní rivers, among others. Their population is estimated at 25,000, and their lands are recognised by the State of Colombia as  collectively owned protected area.

The Arhuaco are a people with recognized social and political consciousness, and although they live scattered across the Sierra de Santa Marta, meetings and ceremonies bringing all the communities together take place in the main villages. The most important of these is Nabusímake.

Featured trips to celebrate the end of 2020

Christmas is for many the best time of year to travel. Better weather in some destinations, better prices in others; more and more people decide travel during the Christmas holidays. However, constant changes to border policies in our destinations have greatly reduced our range of trips. Our programme, which usually offers more than 50 Christmas destinations, has been reduced to fewer than 20 trips.

Some countries have been more successful than others in combating the pandemic, and it is precisely in these countries that we have focused our attention on the preparation of the Christmas holiday trips.

What if PCR testing became the new normal in travel?

Before 2000 it was unthinkable; today we take it for granted

Do you remember airport security checks before 11/sep/2000? Having to take off our shoes to pass through security was almost unimaginable.

Years later, we take it for granted that we have to remove our belts or pass through modern scanners that can see right down to our skeletons. What was unimaginable in 2000, Today is just one more formality.

Similarly, more and more countries are requiring a PCR test as a condition of entry
