We’d like to go back

The exhibition We would like to return is a collection of images and accounts from travellers who visited Mali, Syria, Yemen and Libya between the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s.

At that time, curiosity about new places and different cultures grew exponentially. Travelling off the beaten track became more common, and new destinations appeared in travel agency brochures.

Best videos from 2017 – The winners!

Sixteen participants and twenty-two videos may not seem many compared with the almost 180 entries in the Photography Competition, but 16 is a respectable number. Adventure videos, reports from the other side of the world and heart-warming family stories – an interestingly high proportion of the Video Competition entries feature families. Many thanks to everyone who took part, and congratulations to the winners.

The competition includes videos that tell stories as wonderful and moving as Marina Jiménez’s trip to Indonesia with her father. Others are documentaries: elegant, like Carmen Munté’s film of New Zealand, or brimming with authenticity, like Asier Arteche’s Journey to Yunnan. Then there is Esther Esteban’s Journey to Myanmar, skilfully made and with colour grading that produces truly beautiful images. We have enjoyed them all.

This year we introduced the Video-instant category: videos of around 30 seconds capturing a moment of the trip. Of the three planned categories, “Us and the local population” had no winning entry, so we decided to award its €200 prize to the runner-up in the general category.

Travelling through the bookshops of the world

The bookshops also take us on journeys; and today, on their special day, don’t forget to visit your favourite so that you can daydreaming, asking, advising, reading and consulting guides, diving in travel literature, buy maps or travel accessories...

And there is no denying it: these bookshops are magnetic places with an irresistible appeal for all those who like travel, where we gather in search of kindred spirits as we take the first steps of a great journey — or, why not, on our return.

We would also like to express our thanks here to the booksellers that books offer us, those wonderful conveyors of dreams, hopes, passions.

So we invite you to travel the world through our favourite bookshops

1. TOKYO – BOOK & BED

A bookshop where you can sleep: small compartments welcome those who want to stay and read. We can spend the night devouring books in Japanese or English. The concept has expanded with the opening of two more Book & Bed locations in Kyoto and Fukuoka.

Ginger, one of the treasures of Ivory Coast

If Africa is the cradle of civilisation, it is also the cradle of flavour. One of the star ingredients that gives its dishes their intensity is ginger, especially in countries like Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

We will talk about the first one today because, as well as being the world’s leading cocoa exporter, it is a major producer of ginger. This root is a constant presence in the country’s street markets in all its forms (fresh, dried, processed, in drinks…) and a source of income for many families.

When the sun disappears... Great eclipse of August 2017 in the United States

On a regular and fully predictable basis they are taking place eclipses on planet Earth. Thanks to scientific advances and the computing power of today’s data centres, we can predict these astronomical phenomena well in advance, allowing us to make all the preparations needed to observe them properly.

The stage is set: on 21 August, the moon's shadow will darken the sky for two and a quarter minutes as it crosses Wyoming and Idaho. We have front-row seats reserved.

7 practical tips for travel photography

Before I start writing like a man possessed, I think it is useful to set out what we expect from a trip and from taking photographs.

I assume we see a journey as more than simply moving from one place to another. I hope you see it as an experience: a chance to enjoy ourselves, feel alive and learn. We travel to see the world as people elsewhere see it, and to try to feel what they feel. Viewed this way, travel is an excellent opportunity to learn in a completely different way: first-hand.
